About the Philly Style 8K
The Philly Style 8K is the premiere fundraising race for Students Run Philly Style, the only program in Philadelphia that transforms students' lives through long distance running and mentorship. When participating in this race, runners have the unique opportunity to experience Students Run Philly Style up close as over 1,000 Students Run Philly Style youth will be running!
Students Run Philly Style
Founded in 2004, Students Run Philly Style has created a movement of healthy young people in Philadelphia — a movement that has touched multiple generations of families and measurably impacted the lives of its participants. We pair students with caring adult mentors and ask them to achieve a seemingly impossible goal: run 13.1 or 26.2 miles. Students and mentors train side-by-side, creating meaningful relationships over hundreds of training miles. Youth are empowered as they overcome the challenges of long distance running, ultimately achieving their goals at the finish line and transferring that empowerment to other parts of their lives.
The Philly Style 8K and YOU
You likely know that feeling--overcoming self-doubt, discomfort, challenging schedules--all for the glory of the accomplishment and empowerment it brings. The Philly Style 8K is produced by Students Run Philly Style for the benefit of our youth. This is the first race of our spring season--for many students, their first organized race event! Proceeds from this event are returned back into the core program, allowing us to deepen our reach to Philly's youth. But we can't do it without support from the greater community. About the 8K Cross Country Course
For decades high school, collegiate, and competitive runners have battled on the Belmont Plateau cross country course in Philadelphia's West Fairmount Park. The course is USATF certified and traffic free (minus a squirrel or two....) Expect a mixture of gravel path and grassy field trails as you ascend and descend the hills of the Plateau. The elevation changes and non-paved terrain provide a fun challenge and a unique experience on a course that very few have the opportunity to race! Come with a spirit of adventure and a sense of humor--break up your Blue Cross Broad Street Run training with a jaunt through the woods. There will be a water stop along the course, port-a-potties at the start/finish, and an ambulance on site.
Challenge yourself to become the Diadora King or Queen of the Hill. During the race, you will run up Flagpole Hill three times. Run your best time up the hill and you could win a pair of sneakers from Diadora! Want to learn more about the course and review maps? Click here.
The race begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 14th. The race is chipped time with waived starts. Each registrant has the option to purchase a short sleeve t-shirt at registration (while supplies last), or to opt out of the t-shirt option. All runners receive a special finisher's medal at the race finish. Age Group awards are provided courtesy of Philadelphia Runner. Finishers can enjoy a Philly Style spread of post-race snacks and complimentary post-race massage courtesy of PhilaMassages. Come early for a pre-race warm up lead by DJ G33K and Students Run Philly Style.
Participants must wear an official competitor's number on the front of their shirt. Please check the information on the computer label that has been placed on your number. If there is any change please send an e-mail to email@example.com and indicate your correction. Please remember to fill out the medical information on the back of your race number.
No bicycles, skateboards, roller skates or blades, or other wheeled conveyances or animals (except for seeing-eye dogs) are allowed on the course. These restrictions are for your safety, the safety of others, and insurance considerations. Participants must be able to hear voice commands, as well as vehicle sirens and horns.
There is no bag check at the race. Please note, all children not running in the race MUST be supervised by an adult at ALL TIMES.
